For the second consecutive year, Terry High School graduate Connor January was selected as an Outstanding Performer at the 2019 Texas State Solo-Ensemble Snare Drum Solo Contest (TSSEC). He earned the same accolade during the 2017-2018 school year, making him one of only a few students in the state to earn back-to-back Outstanding Performer medals.
January is a snare percussionist and was a section leader for the Ranger Band drum line for three years. January graduated with the Terry High School Class of 2019.
According to the University Interscholastic League (UIL), of the approximately 100,000 students who participate in the regional UIL music contests and the 25,000 musicians who performed at TSSEC, only two-to-three percent of the solo performances earned the distinguished honor of being recognized as an Outstanding Performer.
Bradley Kent, state director of music for the UIL, noted that the Outstanding Performer medal is identical to those awarded to state champions in all UIL events.
