On April 18, 2019, Texas A&M’s MEEN Girls and OXY teamed up to host "Girls Exploring Engineering" at Reading Junior High School. Established in Fall of 2016, Aggie MEEN Girls has worked alongside Texas A&M's American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Department of Mechanical Engineering to develop a community among female engineers. Their goal is to inspire the next generation of female engineers, which they aim to do through various events put on throughout the year.
The objective of the "Girls Exploring Engineering" event is to increase awareness and understanding of the benefits of taking STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses and pursuing a STEM career. Through their presentation and engaging the students in a hands-on engineering challenge, the MEEN Girls promoted an educational yet competitive atmosphere that ultimately encouraged participants to look further into engineering careers.
The Aggie MEEN Girls walked the Reading JH students through the design process of an engineer as they built Bristle Bots. The students were divided up into teams and could test out their bots against each other before the final competition. After having the change to go back to the drawing board and redesign if needed, the MEEN Girls hosted a friendly competition among all participants, ending with awards.
