Weekly Astronotes for March 1, 2018 - from Bud Whileyman
Our school safety committee (site-based team) met this past week and made recommendations on how we can make our school more safe and secure. After we listed about 10 recommendations we prioritized them and the top 3 were:
- New locks on all classroom doors that don’t have them and to make sure all keys work in existing locks.
- Install intercoms in the principal and assistant principal office that will allow announcements to be made to entire school
- Sets of walkie-talkies for each grade level and front office to be used if students are outside or not in their classrooms.
Additional ideas that will be implemented immediately are:
- Keep all outside doors except front door locked during the school day.
- Keep the cafeteria door and hallway door in front locked and not propped open during lunch and throughout the day.
- Substitute folders need to include safety drill procedures.
- Survey of staff members to see who might be trained in special skills such as CPR.
- Door stops for all rooms that open into the classroom.
- Name badges for all employees and visitors into the building (monitor more closely)
- Be more aware of visitors and suspicious activity in and around the building.
These are some of the initial ideas that our staff has come up with. We would like to allow parent input at our next meeting to see what ideas they might have. If you would like to attend or share your ideas please let me know and I will include you on info. for next meeting.
Please do not drop off and leave your child in the morning without supervision. Doors to the school officially open at 7:00 am. Sometimes they may open earlier if staff is available to supervise. Safety patrol may also enter earlier as they prepare to begin their duties. We have had several students dropped off and left as parents did not wait for them to be allowed access to the building. Thanks for your cooperation in keeping our children safe.
